Our Inspiration
In the news, we keep hearing…the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere.
We acknowledge Haiti’s challenges. Some quick facts:
- 10 Million People
- Over 50% suffer from malnutrition
- 60% live on $3 per day
- 40% unemployment
- $480/year per capita income ($33,550 in U.S.)
- 50% of children do not go to school
- Lack of infrastructure, sanitation, electricity, water and access to healthcare
But, we would argue that in many respects, Haiti is not poor.
Haiti is rich.
In its natural beauty
Its architecture.
Its art.
Its strong religious faith. And, more.
Haiti’s wealth is especially evident in the strength of its people. Haitians’ belief in their historical value as the first independent black republic and in the culture of their country is unwavering – even when no one else believes in them.
Mark Danner, an American educator specializing in U.S. foreign affairs, war and politics, has written: Whether they can read or not, Haiti’s people walk in history, and live in politics. They are independent, proud, fiercely aware of their own singularity.
